English Sterling Silver Lobed Dish, Sheffield 1996

A beautifully simple piece of English silver, hand-selected in London for our collection. Crafted in sterling silver and hallmarked in Sheffield in 1996, this elegant little dish is a lovely example of modern English silversmithing.

The design is wonderfully restrained, with a highly polished oval center surrounded by a broad, softly lobed border. The gentle curves of the rim give the piece its distinctive shape while allowing the beauty and weight of the sterling silver itself to take center stage.

Sheffield has been one of England's most important centers of silvermaking for centuries. The city's Assay Office was established in 1773 and continues to hallmark precious metals today; since 1973, Sheffield has used the rose as its assay mark for silver.

At approximately 5", this is one of those incredibly useful little pieces of silver. We love it filled with nuts or sweets when entertaining, used as a catchall for jewelry or keys, or simply layered amongst a collection of English silver. It would also make an especially lovely wedding, hostess or milestone gift—a piece intended to be used now and eventually passed down.
