Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Scallop Shell Dish, London 1897

A beautiful little piece of Victorian English silver, hand-selected in London for our collection. Crafted in sterling silver and hallmarked in London in 1897, this charming dish takes the form of a deeply fluted scallop shell.

Shell-shaped silver dishes have appeared on English tables for centuries, traditionally used as small serving dishes for butter and condiments. Victorian examples continued the tradition, often incorporating wonderfully naturalistic shell forms and small raised feet. Comparable late-Victorian examples survive as both individual dishes and pairs. 

This example is particularly pretty, with pronounced fluting radiating through the body of the shell and a softly scalloped outer edge. Turn it over and you'll find one of our favorite details: three polished ball feet, which gently raise the shell from the table and give it a lovely sculptural quality.

More than 125 years later, it remains wonderfully useful. Fill it with sea salt, butter, nuts or sweets when entertaining; use it on a dressing table for jewelry; or simply display it amongst a collection of antique English silver.
