Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Goblet, London 1875

A remarkable piece of Victorian English silver, hand-selected from the famed London Silver Vaults. Crafted in sterling silver and hallmarked in London in 1875, during the reign of Queen Victoria, this substantial antique goblet is now more than 150 years old.

The body is beautifully hand engraved with an intricate arrangement of ferns and foliage, extending almost completely around the goblet and finished with a delicate foliate border at the rim. The Victorian era saw a particular fascination with the natural world, and fern motifs became an especially fashionable element of decorative arts during the period.

A pedestal base gives the goblet its handsome, substantial silhouette, while finely beaded detailing along the foot adds another layer of craftsmanship. Inside, the goblet retains its rich gold-gilt interior, creating a beautiful contrast against the polished sterling silver. Gilding was traditionally used inside fine silver drinking vessels both for its luxurious appearance and to help protect the silver surface from the contents of the cup.
