Antique George III Sterling Silver Box, Birmingham 1818

A tiny treasure with more than two centuries of history, this antique sterling silver box was made in Birmingham, England and hallmarked in 1818, during the reign of King George III.

During the Georgian period, small silver boxes such as this were fashionable personal objects, made to hold everything from snuff and medicines to other small necessities and keepsakes. Birmingham was an important center of English silvermaking and became particularly renowned for beautifully crafted small silver wares.

Approximately 2" long, this example has a wonderfully unusual curved form, finished with delicate engraved floral decoration and finely detailed borders. Its petite scale and beautifully worked surface make the craftsmanship all the more charming.

More than 200 years after it was made, we love the idea of giving it a new purpose—as a tiny keepsake box, a place for a treasured ring or small memento, or simply as a beautiful addition to a collection of antique English silver.
