Animalcules is an original Cambridge Imprint design, first published in 2019. It’s a simplified, single-color version of our Milky Way pattern, itself inspired by an eighteenth-century French domino paper. Here, only the base color is printed—and at a much smaller scale—creating a delicate, regular motif ideal for bookbinding or any project needing a fine pattern. The name comes from van Leeuwenhoek’s term for the tiny life-forms he first observed in pond water through the microscope he invented in the late seventeenth century.
